| Useful Information about Motor Insurance Policies
Here is some other useful information about motor insurance policies that doesn't fit into any of the existing categories, but is still useful to know, nonetheless:
No Claims Bonus
This is a discount offered to you for driving claim free during the period of insurance. This is a personal discount and goes with you even if you change insurers after the full year's insurance is over.
No Claims Bonus scales vary from each insurer, but on a general note you could expect 30% for 1 claim free year up to 60 - 65% after 5 years. If you have more than 4 years No Claims Bonus you are also offered the opportunity to protect this by paying an extra fee.
This means that you could have up to two claims in a three - five years period and not have your No Claims Bonus affected.
Driving in Europe.
All UK Motor policies provide the minimum cover required by law in other EU countries. The level of cover is not usually the same level you benefit from in the UK, i.e. you may not be covered for theft or damage incidents abroad.
By informing your Insurer in advance, they can extend your UK level of cover to most holiday destinations. Check the back of your motor policy details because it usually includes this. This may well save you money as an insurer could charge you extra when you telephone.
You should also ask your Insurer for a 'Green Card'. This is internationally recognised as evidence that you have a valid insurance policy should local police question you.
Keeping your Insurer up to date
You must tell your Insurer of any details that have changed from the original proposal form such as Address, occupation, vehicle changes/modifications and motoring convictions including fixed penalties.
If you change your vehicle, it is imperative you inform the Insurance Company, as they will need to change your current insurance certificate to make sure you are covered in the event of a claim.
"Not only is it an offence under the Road Traffic Act to make a false statement or withhold information for the purposes of obtaining a certificate of motor insurance, but it may also invalidate your policy." (ABI) |
