| What to Look for in a Home Insurance Policy
One of the most important things to look out for in your choice of policy is that you have an adequate level of cover, should you ever need to make a claim on your home insurance policy. This is about striking a balance as having too much cover will cost you more in monthly premiums, while having too little cover could prove extremely expensive, should you ever need to make a claim.
Another potential pitfall is Accidental Damage. Insurance policies that state Accidental Damage cover in their terms often have very different interpretations of what constitutes damage, so make sure you read this section of their terms in detail.
Some policies include a "New for Old" clause. You need to determine how important this is to you, before deciding whether or not you need it. It might be worth considering "New for Old" if you have a lot of expensive electrical and/or computer equipment that devalues quickly.
On the same theme is single item thresholds. You should check that anything you own that's very expensive is covered.
Some policies have exclusions for certain things in both buildings and contents cover, so make sure you read this so that you don't get any nasty surprises later on.
